After attending Midlands Yoga for just over 12 months I booked in for my first ever one to one session with Gemma last week. I felt as though I needed to progress with some of the positions and part of what holds me back is fear of doing it wrong and hurting myself.
As I still struggle with back pain issues this fear can be very real and I'm torn between trying as hard as I can or going for the easy option. What I'm most afraid of is getting into difficulty in the class and not wanting to make a fuss. I figured if I could go through the moves on a one to one basis I'd gain confidence knowing where I can make improvements plus, Gemma would understand my limitations - real or imagined.
The lesson was excellent. We went through most of the hatha class postitions that we practice weekly as well as another couple of moves that would be beneficial to me. I felt totally at ease and was able to focus completely on what I needed to do to improve. With just a few minor tweaks here and there I wasn't far off some of the positions I had found hardest.
With no one else present I was also more confident to try that little bit more and this really paid off. I now know at the next class I attend how far I can push myself comfortably.
Whether just starting out and wanting to know more about the best yoga class for you or if you've been going for some time, I'd strongly recommend a one to one class. Being able to focus on what is right for you and your body is extremely important and definitely helps build confidence and boost self esteem - I felt fantastic afterwards.
